Dr Edward Kay presents on Advanced Simulation to Solve and Optimize Process Systems

Norton Straw's Dr Edward Kay recently presented at the workshop entitled Advanced Simulation to Solve and Optimize Process Development Problems held in Warrington, UK where he showed a range of case studies from a selection of Norton Straw's recent work in the chemical process industry .

Key themes of the presentations at the workshop were around mixing, separation, stirred tank reactors and how optimization could be applied to these. 

Edward presented some recent work on modelling oil-water separation by gas bubble flotation, horizontal three-phase separators as well as simulation of extreme low temperatures during re-pressurization of process systems, caused by the Joule-Thomson effect, and the impact of this on pipe material selection and system operation.

On the workshop he commented "it was great to have the opportunity to speak alongside engineers in companies including Siemens and Unilever and meet with others involved in process simulation and system design.  The range of people in attendance was very diverse with a good representation from industry, software developers, academic researchers and government agencies.  It was also a good opportunity for us to showcase our capabilities in simulating these complex process flows".

Norton Straw will also be presenting a joint paper with Siemens PLM at the upcoming International Symposium on Mixing in Industrial Processes IX (http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/chemical-engineering/speciality-products/fluids/ISMIP9/index.aspx) in Birmingham, UK 26-28 June.
