Norton Straw completes diversification programme for Glacier Energy Services

Norton Straw Consultants has announced the completion of a business diversification programme for Glacier Energy Services.

Glacier Energy is an expanding group of businesses offering products and services relating to heat exchangers, onsite machining, weld cladding and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).  The company has an excellent pedigree, predominantly in the offshore industry, and wanted to explore how its expertise might be applied in other sectors.  They asked engineering business experts Norton Straw for support.

Norton Straw followed the formal process they have developed and applied successfully in other commissions to Glacier's particular business model.  A workshop and interviews with senior management was used to establish which strengths of the business would be appealing in other industries.  Further research was done on the history of the member companies of the group to find previous business streams that had lapsed, and individual technical expertise embedded in the business that was not being exploited.

This initial stage generated a short-list of potential diversification targets, and recommended that the nuclear sector would be the best target market for Glacier to achieve early progress.  The heat exchanger business in particular had strong historical expertise in providing equipment for nuclear generators, and the NDT division were proficient in techniques that were much in demand.  Therefore, Glacier commissioned Norton Straw to undertake a second stage of detailed business development support, structuring a programme of introductions for  Glacier to engage with key potential purchasers and ensuring that their business systems were compliant with nuclear industry demands.

Dr Simon Rees, Projects Director at Norton Straw, commented "Glacier clearly possesses immense strengths in their premium products and services and are well suited to enter the nuclear supply chain.  We were able to draw that experience and expertise together into a recognisable business proposition that is opening opportunities for their diversification process.  It's been a pleasure working with their team and we wish them every success in the future".

Scott Martin, Managing Director of Glacier Energy, added, "We were pleased to be able to access the expertise of Norton Straw to help guide our sector diversification activities, and they added value to Glacier by helping develop our business proposition and route to market for the Nuclear industry"
