Transforming aerospace design processes

This week Dr Simon Rees presented at the Simcenter 2019 conference in Amsterdam. The aerospace case study focussed on Norton Straw's work with one of the world's leading industrial technology companies.  Simon presented how the team at Norton Straw supported evaluation and development of new engineering simulation approaches within a wider design process.  The simulation processes implemented were based on flow and thermal simulation using Simcenter STAR-CCM+. Along with Norton Straw's...

Simon Rees to give lecture in Teesside

Norton Straw Project Director Dr Simon Rees is giving a lecture to the IMechE North East Process Centre on Thursday 5th December in Billingham.  Dr Rees also chairs the IMechE Upstream Oil and Gas Technical Committee, and the lecture will cover some recent work done on the deployment of digital technology in upstream oil and gas.  A recent report produced by the committee concluded that despite some examples of good practice, in general the sector was falling behind other sectors.  As Dr Rees commented: "The industry...

Welcome Seb Sikora

Seb Sikora joins us from the University of Leeds faculties of Engineering and Environment, where he spent four years following his PhD within the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, developing physical and computational tools and processes for the mechanical characterization of natural materials and pre-clinical testing of new musculoskeletal therapies, followed by 2.5 years within the Institute of Climate and Atmospheric Science designing and building novel scientific instruments for field data collection and laboratory...

Norton Straw win Fusion Reactor Project

UKAEA have announced that a team of Norton Straw Consultants and HiETA Technologies have won a key concept design contract on the new STEP fusion reactor project.  STEP, or Spherical Tokamak Energy to Power, is the UK's own fusion programme, occurring in parallel with the international ITER project and intended to deliver power to the grid by 2040. The contract is to develop concepts for the heat exchanger that cools the wall of the diverter, a crucial zone of the torus that experiences incredibly high temperatures.  The...

Just in the Nich...olson of time!

We must ask if we are becoming an engineering com-pun-ay at this point based on our recent press releases! Having recently submitted his PhD at the University of Nottingham in Mechanical Engineering, Jonathon Nicholson was quickly snapped up and is looking to broaden his knowledge after researching multiphase flows focusing on thin fluid films in aircraft engines. With his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Jonathon continues adding to the considerable technical expertise at Norton Straw with his notable activity in fluid mechanics,...
